Great Wall Sangan: The State-Banquet Winery

If Domaine Franco-Chinois is a seed, Great Wall Sangan is a tree, old, large, branches everywhere.

Great Wall wine sits inside COFCO, the China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation. It is the most recognized Chinese wine brand by a wide margin. In any Chinese supermarket, restaurant, or airport duty-free, you will see the red Great Wall label. It is synonymous with industrial-scale Chinese wine.

But Great Wall is more than one winery. It is a brand portfolio.

Sangan is the most distinctive of these. It has its own vineyards, its own cellar, its own winemaking team. Its positioning is not to sell wine, it is to represent the country.


Sangan’s strongest brand asset is its state-banquet record.

The 2014 APEC event deserves a separate note. Before that, the lead drink at Chinese state banquets was baijiu, Maotai and Wuliangye. Wine had been the supporting role. At the 2014 Beijing APEC, Sangan’s wine carried the banquet for the first time. Decanter China’s headline at the time: “The APEC State Banquet Goes International, Wine Replaces Baijiu as Lead.”

This was more than a brand marketing win. It marked the Chinese state’s confidence in the proposition that China can make good wine. Serving Chinese wine to foreign leaders takes confidence.


Sangan Winery sits along the Sangan River, where the Sangan and Yang rivers meet at the Huailai basin, before emptying into Guanting Reservoir. This is the core of the Huailai region.

The vineyards carry 17 international varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Chardonnay, and others. The gentle slopes on both banks of the Sangan and the sandy-gravelly soils give excellent drainage. The Guanting Reservoir makes the Sangan River Valley the mildest, most stable microclimate in the whole Huailai region.

The estate runs a large underground oak-barrel cellar that visitors can tour.

Sangan faces the problem every flagship inside a large group faces: the gravity of the parent brand.

To an international critic, Great Wall first reads as a volume producer. When a consumer pays ¥50 at the supermarket for a Great Wall Five-Star, then pays ¥500 for the Chief Winemaker Selection from Sangan, both wines are filed under Great Wall in mental space. Sangan’s quality climb is dragged on by Great Wall’s overall industrial association.

Lafite has its commercial labels; Margaux has its entry tier. Bordeaux consumers have long since learned to separate Grand Vin from second wine. Chinese consumers have not yet built that frame.

My view: Sangan does not need higher scores. It needs cleaner brand separation. When people say Sangan, what should come to mind is a state-banquet table, the gravel of the Sangan River Valley, a chief winemaker’s signature, not the red label on a supermarket shelf.


If you visit Huailai and tour only one winery, Domaine Franco-Chinois or Canaan will give you more depth on quality. But if you are interested in the industrial history of Chinese wine, Sangan is irreplaceable.

It has a museum tracing the story from 1979 onward. It has an underground cellar far larger than any boutique. It has a complete visitor route. Tourism-card holders enter free; hotel guests enter free on room card. Hours 9:00–16:00, on the hour, with guided commentary.

Great Wall Sangan is a living textbook of China’s industrial wine history.
