Hebei: Estates You Should Not Skip
Amethyst Manor
Section titled “Amethyst Manor”Huailai’s International Front Door
Section titled “Huailai’s International Front Door”Founded by Ma Shusen in 2008. 18 kilometers from the Badaling section of the Great Wall.
That distance is the strategy. Amethyst is not only a winery, it is a Great Wall–adjacent wine experience. International tourists who come to Badaling and are willing to drive thirty extra minutes can step into a Chinese boutique estate.
In 2017, Amethyst won La Revue du Vin de France’s Chinese Winery of the Year. That is the highest-level recognition from a mainstream French wine outlet for any Chinese estate.
Marselan and Syrah are Amethyst’s strengths. The Crystal Reserve Marselan won at DWWA in both 2023 and 2024. Brussels International Gold in 2018–2019 cemented Amethyst’s profile in international competitions.
Amethyst integrates vineyard, winemaking, bottling, cultural programming, and cellar storage on-site. Open to visitors. Taxi from Donghuayuan North high-speed station.
Reedoxide Winery
Section titled “Reedoxide Winery”One of China’s Most Beautiful Estates
Section titled “One of China’s Most Beautiful Estates”Reedoxide did something almost without precedent in China: a serious commitment to biodynamic farming.
Every building uses stone from the vineyards and local red brick. Not as a design statement, these stones were already there. There is no boundary between architecture and vineyard. The stone walls are the soil continuing upward. This unaffected construction logic has earned Reedoxide its reputation as one of China’s most beautiful wineries.
Annual production: about 40,000 bottles. Extreme boutique.
Biodynamic farming has almost no practitioners in China. Ningxia’s Domaine des Arômes earned Demeter certification in 2023, China’s first. Reedoxide started biodynamic trials earlier but has not yet completed Demeter certification.
40,000 bottles means you are unlikely to find Reedoxide in the open market. It is closer to a demonstration of an idea, telling you, inside an industrially dominated region, what the other path looks like.
Canaan Wine Group · Chapter & Verse
Section titled “Canaan Wine Group · Chapter & Verse”Huailai’s Largest Boutique Estate
Section titled “Huailai’s Largest Boutique Estate”Canaan was discussed in the Domaine Franco-Chinois chapter. Its standalone value deserves its own paragraph.
| Item | Data |
|---|---|
| Founded | 2006 |
| First planting | 2009 |
| Vineyard area | 278 ha (~4,170 mu) |
| Winery footprint | 65,000 m² |
| Annual production | over 500,000 bottles |
| Brand name | Chapter & Verse (诗百篇) |
500,000 bottles. Among boutique estates that is significant scale. Canaan demonstrates that boutique quality and moderate scale can coexist, not every boutique estate must stay at a few tens of thousands of bottles to maintain quality.
World’s Best Vineyards:
- 2023: #80 (China’s first appearance)
- 2024: #77
Chapter & Verse Reserve Chardonnay: Robert Parker / Wine Advocate 92.
The brand name Chapter & Verse (literally a hundred verses) comes from Du Fu’s poem about Li Bai: “Li Bai writes a hundred verses on a measure of wine, sleeps in the wine shops of Chang’an.” Naming a wine brand after the wine-poet’s capacity is either inspired or self-conscious cultural consumption. I lean inspired.
Huaxia Great Wall (Changli)
Section titled “Huaxia Great Wall (Changli)”The Specimen of Big Industry
Section titled “The Specimen of Big Industry”Huaxia Great Wall is the Changli base of the Great Wall brand, founded in 1988. One of the largest dry-red producers in China.
AAAA-grade tourism rating, integrating production, R&D, and tourism. A standard sample of big industrial Chinese wine, large-scale production, branded marketing, value pricing.
Huaxia Great Wall has been to Changli what Changyu has been to Yantai: it tied the place-name to wine, but in doing so it has also flooded out the boutique-estate stories with industrial-scale narrative.
Kings Estate
Section titled “Kings Estate”Changli’s Marselan Pioneer
Section titled “Changli’s Marselan Pioneer”Kings Estate sits in the Jieshi sub-region near Beidaihe, with 1,300 mu of vineyards.
Kings’ differentiation is clear: Marselan. In 2021, Kings received the China Alcoholic Drinks Association’s Chinese Wine Single-Vineyard certification, the first in Changli.
In a Changli context where Cabernet Sauvignon has been the default, Kings chose Marselan as the differentiator. Marselan’s thick skin and loose cluster structure give it better resistance to Changli’s summer humidity. The choice is a pragmatic response to Changli’s terroir, not just a varietal-marketing play.
Kings has been named Best Winery Travel Destination. If you visit one boutique estate in Changli, Kings is the first pick.
Geng’s Wine Lodge
Section titled “Geng’s Wine Lodge”China’s First Family-Style Wine Lodge
Section titled “China’s First Family-Style Wine Lodge”Geng Xuegang is a grape farmer from Changli. Drawing on the family-château model of Bordeaux, he invested RMB 5 million himself and built a small lodge integrating dining, accommodation, tourism, and hand-made winemaking. Annual production: roughly 80 tonnes.
The significance is not the wine quality (no international scoring record). It is the idea: a farmer used his own money and his own hands to build a Chinese garage winery. In a region dominated by major producers, that grassroots entrepreneurial gesture is worth recording.
Moutai Wine (Changli Base)
Section titled “Moutai Wine (Changli Base)”A Baijiu Giant Crosses Over
Section titled “A Baijiu Giant Crosses Over”The Moutai Group built a wine base in Changli in 2002. 5,000 mu of standardized planting, production capacity in the tens of thousands of tonnes. A further RMB 320 million was invested into a boutique property, Moutai Wine Boutique Estate, on the northern slope of Phoenix Mountain.
The most interesting detail: a granite cave below Dongshan Park in Changli was converted into a wine-aging cellar, awarded China’s First Wine Cellar by the China Food Industry Association in 2014.
But honestly, Moutai’s brand in wine has always been awkward. The name Moutai in the baijiu world stands for the apex. In wine, it produces confusion. Consumers are unsure whether Moutai wine means Moutai-level quality or a baijiu giant’s side experiment. Wine enthusiasts have not built trust around the brand.
